Surrendered Heart. Renewed Mind. Body Follows.

Hi. My name is Casi and I am a recovering shame dieter. I have wasted way too many years of my life feeling like I am not enough because of my weight. I can remember as early as age 10, and maybe earlier, feeling less than because of my weight. I have tried just about every diet under the sun. I have vivid memories that still haunt me of being teased because of my weight or not being loved or chosen because of my weight. Some of the diets and programs brought success. For my 30th birthday I reached my goal weight and had lost almost 80 pounds. I was proud of myself but it didn’t address the root issue.

A couple years ago I met a new friend at church. She invited me to her workout class. I went and it was nothing like I have ever experienced before. She lets the Holy Spirit lead her classes and she encourages participants to surrender our heart and allow the Spirit to renew our mind and the body will follow. This really challenged everything I ever learned about fitness.

Due to schedules and moving, I wasn’t able to continue this class. But fast forward a couple years and she started offering a class minutes from my house on Saturday mornings. YAY! Today was the first class and it was a breath of fresh air. I told her that it was just the reminder I needed because I am having to retrain 25+ years of wrong thinking.

She started out the class talking about what I mentioned above. She said that so often we work out and/or eat healthy because we are motivated by feeling like we aren’t enough. We want to feel loved and we feel the need to prove that we are worthy of love. This really struck home. We need a new way! And there is a new way!

You need to surrender everything you think you know and allow the Spirit to guide you. There is so much FREEDOM in knowing we are LOVED. We don’t have to work to earn God’s love… we ARE loved because HE is LOVE. When we are free it frees us up to be God’s vessel and to actually see the people He places in front of us (not just be consumed with ourselves and our insecurities).

As we were doing a squat exercise this morning Megan first had us do the squats as we normally would. Then she taught us how to breathe properly. When we did that the exercise was easier. She said that is how life is too. If we stay connected to the breath of the Holy Spirit in us, we will move through life easier.

I think the biggest takeaway that I had from the class was during an exercise where Megan encouraged us to pay attention to where the exercise was causing burning pain. She said to lean into the tension…when you feel the pressure to let up, press in harder. This is good training for life. Maybe the discomfort you are feeling in your life is the very thing changing your heart. Lean into the pain.

Talking about this class doesn’t do it justice. I am so thankful that God brought Megan into my life to introduce me to these concepts so that He can speak truth and love into me. I am loved just as I am. I am created in His image. There is nothing I can do that can make Him love me more or less. There is so much freedom in truly believing this and living it out. This is the better way, my friends.
